I think it has a "story" but it's very thin is the problem. It's a story aimed at kids who obviously won't question character motivations and the character archetypes are very black and white. Think about Cell; this is a purely artificial biological being. Instead of just going "I'm gonna destroy everything" a more competent sci-fi writer might have him question what is the meaning of life, what does it mean to have sentience and what is the value of life. I think something created artificially would value life more than Cell does who is evil just for evil's sake. Think of Blade Runner and Roy.

Just my opinion though
they did do that, with android 16.

Compared to other anime, nope. Then again in Naruto, Bleach, all them, what constitutes a deep story? Flashbacks, flashbacks, flashbacks, angst empty emo angst that'll eventually be used in a Linkin Park/Skillet/Three Days Grace AMV.
I kinda rather DB's flimsy plot. There is virtually no depth, though it can get deep (Frieza saga, History of Trunks, Android 8, Wrath of the Dragon) because it knows it doesn't need to be.

Think of it as how a Saiyan's entire outfit can change if they go Super Saiyan.

So....His shoes are Super Saiyan 4?

Here's the the glorious position of being part of DBZ forums' prestiged Member #OVER 9000 club.

Personally I think the biggest depth to Dragon Ball is some of the ideas Toriyama threw in with the whole 'ki' aspect and stuff like that. The story itself doesn't have much.

DB has no plot whatsoever as to how Toriyama sees it.
I also think it has no plot compared to some other series.
It was made and adapted purely for entertainment.
If many fans see some sort of heavy plot in it, that's their perspective.
It's not wrong to say it has plot nor is it wrong to say it has no plot.

The biggest plot was Namek saga.. But that doesnt matter, the strength of Dragon Ball is the character development, how many other animes or mangas has had more than one time skip? Dragon Ball shows the story of a young kid (12 years old?) growing into his twenties, thirties, fourties and even fifties.. Not a single show does this

Pretty sure YuYuHakusho had 3 or 4 I think one of them was a year and the last one was 3 years.

but as for dbzs plot its kinda always different and small, frieza you could say its about goku really coming to be with his saiyan ways after vegetas death and avenging them while fighting for all his other loved ones.

cell saga about gohans true power and learning to not be afraid of his own power and stop letting his friends die? idn just how I kinda looked at it.

yuyuhakusho for kinda the same type anime I would say has a bigger plot(still not really that big 2 of the main villians just want someone stronger to kill them)

but yah if yer looking for a solid plot dbz is not the right place to look, id go watch fma:b

DBZ has no plot, just like romantic comedies have no plot.

Girl meets boy
Girl falls in love with boy and visa versa
Boy does something stupid
Girl gets mad
Girl and boy kiss and make up at the end of movie.

You should have ended that at "Girl meets boy"

It's threads like this that make me question why I should love DBZ as much as I do if it apparently is abysmal in every category that makes for a good story.

Goku's philosophy is faaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaar from basic the basic good guy :errm: .
So how about instead of just declaring that, you provide some reasons you feel he is FAAAAAR from the basic good guy because from what I see, that's what he is. He always does the right thing, he is very naive and always makes the correct moral decision. Granted, Goku is one of my favorite characters BECAUSE of this, it's just he lacks depth most heroes have.

Sure he's got the whole "saiyan ruthless killer past forgotten" angle but once that's forgotten, it's all good guy there. In fact, him killing Grandpa Gohan isn't even him, he has lost all control and the guilt he SHOULD feel over that is extremely narrow. He literally realizes it was him who killed his grandfather and then goes "Oh, I'll AVENGE YOU!"(paraphrase)

And yea, Gogito was right about #16 I forgot about him but IIRC his development is still very limited though I haven't really read through that section of the manga extensively.
